Luckily there\u2019s a whole sub-category of <strong>recreational kayaks that are cheaper, lighter, and user-friendly.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hailing from Michigan, Sun Dolphin has been crafting human-powered watercraft since 1982. Today they offer everything from recreational and fishing kayaks to stand up paddleboards, canoes, and paddle boats.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After my Sun Dolphin Aruba 10 review, I was pleased to find that this is a well-made recreational model.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While it\u2019s easy to quibble with some of its shortcomings like its <strong>small weight capacity and uncomfortable seat<\/strong>,<strong> I love how maneuverable it is<\/strong> and how much work Sun Dolphin has done to boost the speed as much as they can.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Pros<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>A price-efficient model that gets you on the water cheap<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The lightweight and small size makes it one of the easiest hard-sided kayaks to transport<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The foot pegs can accommodate paddlers of various heights<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Cons<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>The seat could be more comfortable<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Struggles to track in windy conditions and gets blown off course when you stop paddling<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Despite the curved bow, it\u2019s still not a very fast kayak<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Things to Consider Before Buying a Sun Dolphin Aruba 10 SS<\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"752\" src=\"https:\/\/www.happinesswithout.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/sun-dolphin-aruba-10-on-the-beach.jpg\" alt=\"Picture of the Sun Dolphin Aruba 10 on the beach\" class=\"wp-image-1436\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.happinesswithout.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/sun-dolphin-aruba-10-on-the-beach.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.happinesswithout.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/sun-dolphin-aruba-10-on-the-beach-150x110.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>As light and small as the Sun Dolphin Aruba 10 is compared to others, it doesn\u2019t have many storage compartments for a ten-foot kayak. Before you purchase, make sure you have a good spot to keep it. Preferably this is a protected area where the boat will be out of the sun and rain when not in use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you can\u2019t carry it to the water, make sure your vehicle can safely transport it. This <strong>durable plastic<\/strong> is designed to absorb most collisions, drops, or mistakes you make as you learn the fine points of kayaking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While tougher than many other materials such as marine grade plywood, fiberglass, or inflatables, the Aruba 10 is one of the flimsier plastic kayaks. While it\u2019s still tough, Sun Dolphin has <strong>sacrificed some of their durability to create as light and portable a model as possible<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Exercise caution with your Aruba 10 to ensure a long life for your boat. The more bumps or scrapes you put it through the more the plastic will begin to slough off the hull weakening the frame and decreasing your boat\u2019s speed.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Performance<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The wide hull combined with the flat bottom is <strong>not made to win any sprints or marathons<\/strong>. While the curved bow and stern make it a little more hydrodynamic than it would appear, paddlers in a hurry will be disappointed with its performance.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You may find traveling in a group to be frustrating and chances are you\u2019ll be paddling harder than you\u2019d like trying to keep up.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Maneuverability<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>What the Aruba 10 SS lacks in speed, it makes up for with <strong>one of the tightest turn radiuses of any kayak<\/strong>. Beginners will appreciate being able to make sharp turns with just a couple of paddle strokes. More experienced paddlers will feel like they\u2019re paddling a sports car as they weave around the lake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Comfort<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Cost-effective boats usually have to cut corners in a few places to remain economically priced. Unfortunately, a comfortable seat tends to be one of the first casualties.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Aruba 10\u2019s seat is a basic plastic design with little padding to speak of. While you may not mind if you\u2019re only out for an hour or so, <strong>don\u2019t be surprised if your back starts to ache and hips tighten up if you use it consistently<\/strong>. You can make life a little easier by investing in some cheap foam padding which helps a little.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s not all doom and gloom. The Aruba 10 SS has <strong>adjustable foot braces that help accommodate a wide range of paddlers<\/strong>. One noteworthy mention is that the pegs can be hard to adjust on the water as the boat can feel tippy while you bend forward to change them. It\u2019s best to make all your adjustments before launching.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The spacious cockpit makes it <strong>an easy boat to get in and out of<\/strong>. The only drawback to this is that water has a bigger hole to swamp the kayak in rough water situations.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Stability &amp; Tracking<\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"700\" height=\"563\" src=\"https:\/\/www.happinesswithout.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Aruba-10-tracking.jpg\" alt=\"Picture of the Aruba 10 tracking on a river\" class=\"wp-image-1434\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.happinesswithout.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Aruba-10-tracking.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.happinesswithout.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Aruba-10-tracking-150x121.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>The flat bottom design <strong>enhances stability<\/strong> and will give beginners confidence when they climb into an Aruba 10 for the first time. The seat is set just above the hull giving you a low center of gravity and ample room for error on the water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Such<strong> short boats are difficult to keep on track.<\/strong> Longer keels cut through the water better and aren\u2019t blown off course by wind or waves. Sun Dolphin has tried to mitigate this by giving the Aruba 10 SS a curved bow which does help to an extent. Nonetheless, it\u2019s difficult to provide good tracking in a boat of this size.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Durability<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Being made of plastic makes the Aruba 10 a <strong>tough boat.<\/strong> But sacrificing some of the hull\u2019s integrity for a lighter design does have some drawbacks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The upside is it can <strong>handle the majority of on-water collisions<\/strong>. Practicing good habits when moving the boat to and from the water will ensure a long life for your boat.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Always carry your kayak to and from the water. This may mean enlisting someone\u2019s help if the boat is too heavy. Be careful coming into shore particularly if paddling in the surf or approaching a rocky beach.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Portability<\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"700\" height=\"552\" src=\"https:\/\/www.happinesswithout.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/aruba-10-portability-2.jpg\" alt=\"Picture of the Aruba 10 on a car\" class=\"wp-image-1435\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.happinesswithout.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/aruba-10-portability-2.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.happinesswithout.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/aruba-10-portability-2-150x118.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>At 40 pounds, this is <strong>one of the lightest hard-sided kayaks on the market<\/strong>. Some will be able to carry it solo and the handholds located on the bow and stern make tandem carries easy.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite the lightweight design and short keel, I\u2019d still recommend some sort of roof rack if you need to transport your kayak via car to the water. I love that it\u2019s light enough that I can transport it via a bike trailer.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Features &amp; Accessories<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A <strong>small covered hatch<\/strong> is located behind the seat, allowing you to bring along a little bit of gear and protect it from the elements. But it\u2019s not enough to hold an expedition\u2019s worth of supplies. This coupled with the <strong>small weight capacity makes it better suited for day excursions<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There\u2019s a basic water bottle holder in the cockpit but no deck bungees to keep gear close at hand while paddling.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There is a nice bungee cord further along the bow to hold your paddle. I love boats with this addition, especially when I\u2019m entering or exiting as I don\u2019t have to worry about my paddle floating away while I focus on my balance.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Value<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>While not a world-class kayak by any stretch, the Aruba 10 is perfectly serviceable. The <strong>top-notch maneuverability is headline-grabbing <\/strong>and Sun Dolphin has done what they can to coax as much tracking and speed as they can out of this ten-foot kayak.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But the <strong>seat is far from comfortable<\/strong> and while I appreciate the stability, the lack of speed and small weight capacity limits the boat\u2019s versatility. There\u2019s also no included goodies like a paddle that you sometimes get with entry-level kayaks.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Testimonials<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>I spent some time reading the reviews of other folks who\u2019ve paddled an Aruba 10 SS and the general consensus seems to be a positive one. The uncomfortable seat was a common theme as was difficulty with its tracking. If you\u2019re looking for something on the higher or lower end of the financial scale, here are three of my favorite alternatives to Sun Dolphin\u2019s Aruba 10.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Pelican Trailblazer 100<\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"700\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.happinesswithout.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Pelican-Trailblazer-100\u202fside-view.png\" alt=\"Picture of the Pelican Trailblazer 100\" class=\"wp-image-1429\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.happinesswithout.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Pelican-Trailblazer-100\u202fside-view.png 700w, https:\/\/www.happinesswithout.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Pelican-Trailblazer-100\u202fside-view-150x68.png 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Very similar in design and performance to the Aruba 10, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pelicansport.com\/ca_en\/trailblazer-100-nxt-fireman-red-white\">Pelican Trailblazer 100<\/a> is a short, sturdy, and durable entry-level kayak.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It boasts a <strong>slightly higher load capacity<\/strong> of 275 pounds and actually checks in two pounds lighter than the Aruba 10. It has the same hull length but lacks the upturned bow and stern design so it <strong>struggles even more if you try to pick up speed<\/strong> and doesn\u2019t glide very well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But with a stern storage hatch, cupholder, and bungee webbing to hold your paddle, it <strong>provides similar performance<\/strong> for a slightly cheaper price tag from most retailers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Slightly higher load capacity<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Similar performance but a little cheaper from most places<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Wide hull slows it down<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.happinesswithout.com\/pelican-trailblazer-100-kayak-review\/\">Read our full review of the Pelican Trailblazer 100.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Intex Challenger K1<\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"711\" src=\"https:\/\/www.happinesswithout.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Intex-Challenger-K1-Kayak.jpg\" alt=\"Intex Challenger K1 Kayak picture\" class=\"wp-image-1073\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.happinesswithout.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Intex-Challenger-K1-Kayak.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.happinesswithout.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Intex-Challenger-K1-Kayak-150x104.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re looking for an <strong>even cheaper recreational option<\/strong>, there are plenty of inflatable kayak designs to choose from. While not as flimsy as their unearned reputation would suggest, the <strong>inflatable<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.intexcorp.com\/products\/sporting-goods\/sport-series-boats\/challenger-k1-kayak\/\">Intex Challenger K1<\/a> does require more caution when carrying to and from the water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You\u2019ll also need to inflate and deflate between uses which adds a little bit of prep time, but the process is simple. As expected from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.happinesswithout.com\/best-cheap-kayak\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"2012\">cheapest kayak<\/a>, it will<strong> struggle in any sort of wind and waves but provides the same stability and decent maneuverability<\/strong> as its hard-sided counterparts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A pump and paddle are also included which makes it a good all-in-one starter kit for the beginning kayaker.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Terrific price with included goodies like a paddle and air pump<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Easy set-up and minimal storage space<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Falters in wind and waves, even on lakes and calm rivers<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lacks storage space or the ability to install a spray skirt<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.happinesswithout.com\/intex-challenger-k1-kayak-review\/\">Read our full review of the Intex Challenger K1.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Future Beach Fusion 124<\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/www.happinesswithout.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/future-beach-fusion-124.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1413\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.happinesswithout.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/future-beach-fusion-124.png 600w, https:\/\/www.happinesswithout.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/future-beach-fusion-124-150x75.png 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>A little beefier than the Aruba 10, the <a href=\"https:\/\/futurebeach.com\/fusion-124\/\">Future Beach Fusion 124<\/a> is able to carry up to 300 pounds. <strong>The stern hatch is watertight <\/strong>which makes it better suited for longer trips. The luxury means it does come at a <strong>higher price point<\/strong> than the Trailblazer 100 and the Aruba 10.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The wide cockpit brings similar pros and cons. It\u2019s easy to enter but water spills into the seat in rough water. It does seem to handle the chop a little better which makes it <strong>more capable on rivers<\/strong>. The v-shaped hull design brings <strong>a little more speed<\/strong> to the table too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But make no mistake, this is still a kayak designed strictly for recreational purposes and has no business in serious weather. The chair has drawn similar criticisms for being uncomfortable. Some users have gone as far as to call it a \u201cspine buster.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Watertight storage space<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Better tracking and overall performance in rough water<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Uncomfortable seat limits how long you\u2019ll want to sit in it<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Conclusion<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Aruba 10 isn\u2019t going to knock your socks off. She\u2019s not the fastest or most durable of the recreational kayaks.
